CBD for Birds?  That’s right. Although CBD has become a fairly commonly used substance for our furry friends like cats and dogs, there is also reason to use it for birds! Research has now shown that birds, reptiles, and even fish have an endocannabinoid system – just like people!

This article explains that insects are the only animal that don’t have an endocannabinoid system. Pretty amazing, right?! The article focuses on whether CBD is effective for anxious pets. It points out that it can also be used for specific phobias such as a fear of thunderstorms or vacuum cleaners.

Because CBD oils for pets are almost always derived from hemp, they contain no, or very little THC. CBD acts on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and is pharmacologically active for many types of pets. Not only cats and dogs, but rabbits, hamsters, and birds are often treated with CBD for their anxiety.

This article explains the benefits of hemp oils and the benefit of their Omega-3 essential fatty acids for birds. Red Palm Oil, Flax Seed Oil, and Coconut Oil are also high in these omega-3’s – so what’s the difference? Saturated fat. Hemp oil has about 8% saturated fat. Red palm oil and coconut oil are around 45% and 95% saturated fat respectively. Hemp oil, including That’s Natural’s pet drops, have no flavor, which means that most birds will accept it on their foods easily. It goes on to say that feather picking is often due to irritation and itchiness of dry skin. We have creams and lotions for that. Birds don’t. By adding Essential Fatty Acids to their diet, it will help keep their skin healthy. A few drops of oil on a birds food can make a huge difference in skin and feather condition on birds.

Articles like this one explain why many pets, especially dogs, don’t need as much CBD as people. Dogs, for instance, have been shown to have approximately 10x more CB receptors than people. This is why many pet CBD products are such low milligrams. So how do we figure out dosages? That is the problem. The common suggestion is to start low, and build your way up.
