The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that approximately 20 million people in the United States suffer from some form of peripheral neuropathy. Diabetes is the most common cause of chronic peripheral neuropathy. CBD has been shown to help those with diabetes and insulin resistance, but there is also research for those struggling with neuropathy.
This study from the NIH was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, involving 303 patients. 128 were randomized to the cannabinoids, and 118 to placebo. They then measure the responder rate based on a peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP) numeric rating scale of 0-10. At the 30% responder level, there were statistically significant differences in those using cannabinoids and those using placebo.
The reduction in mean PNP pain was also numerically lower in those using the cannabinoids, but there were also other results measured which are intriguing. Sleep quality and subject global impression of change (SGIC) were also favorable to those using cannabinoids. The conclusion to the study was that these findings demonstrated, in a meaningful way, clinically important improvements in pain, sleep quality, and SGIC for those using the cannabinoid treatment.
Additionally, there were no identifiable safety concerns while using the cannabinoids. The most commonly used pharmaceuticals for neuropathic pain have a plethora of side effects. The side effects for these medications include: dizziness, weakness, blurred vision, loss of balance, dry mouth, constipation, upper stomach pain, jaundice, hallucinations, fever, tachycardia, breast swelling, decreased sex drive, and itching or rashes.
Seeing that no known side effects were noted with the cannabinoids, this is extremely optimistic for those struggling with neuropathy.
