Anxiety and the Endocannabinoid System

Research on Cannabidiol (CBD) is showing that cannabinoids may benefit and help people who suffer the negative health effects from chronic stress and anxiety. The endocannabinoid system was discovered in 1992 by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam and researchers William Devane and Dr. Lumir Hanus. Although it was discovered in the early 90’s, it wasn’t clear what role it played in our bodies until the last decade. Studies are now emerging, with amazing evidence showing what it’s role in our bodies. Anxiety is one area where it’s role is very important.

The modulation of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) influences a wide range of functions. These functions range from metabolic to mental disorders. This study by the National Institutes of Health explains the ECS and its role in anxiety. As the study says:

“The recently developed genetic tools have revealed different but complementary roles for the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor on GABAergic and glutamatergic neuronal populations. This dual functionality, together with the plasticity of CB1 receptor expression, particularly on GABAergic neurons, as induced by stressful and rewarding experiences, gives the ECS a unique regulatory capacity for maintaining emotional homeostasis.”

The article elaborates and explains that ECS activation deteriorates reconsolidation, but to achieve proper extinction depends on intact CB1 receptor signaling. The study concludes with this statement: “Thus, both for anxiety and fear memory processing, endocannabinoid signaling may ensure an appropriate reaction to stressful events. Therefore, the ECS can be considered as a regulatory buffer system for emotional responses.”

This article explains how to activate the ECS. Although there are many ways to activate the ECS, this article specifically points out several cannabinoids and terpenes. Cannabidiol, Omega-3 fatty acids (contained in terpenes and cannabinoids, Caryophyllene, and other compounds that the hemp plant contains are mentioned.

That’s Natural products are considered to be full spectrum meaning they contain cannabinoids and terpenes from the whole plant. Every mammal has an endocannabinoid system,  which is fueled by these cannabinoids and terpenes.   The combination of these compounds help to provide what is known as the entourage effect. Here you can listen to Dr. David Allen explain how the endocannabinoid system contributes to how our immune system and nervous system function.  By providing pure, potent, and trusted products, That’s Natural continues to strive to meet our customer’s needs – something we have been doing for twelve years! With 100% traceability of where our hemp comes from, you can be confident in what you are putting on, or in, your body.
