Dogs are like kids to a lot of people. We hurt when they hurt – we are happy when they are happy. When they are in pain, it can sometimes be harder than another person hurting – simply because we can’t tell them it will be ok. Holistic veterinarians have started turning to hemp products for our pets. CBD seems to be what a lot of pets are most responsive to within cannabis. While pets don’t respond well to THC, CBD tends to bring forth a feeling of calmness and balance in all mammals.
CBD fits into mammals bodies like a glove. We all have an endocannabinoid system, which is basically a network of receptors and activators that regulate certain functions of the body. Endocannabinoids are chemicals which our bodies produce to maintain homeostasis. Unfortunately, our pets sometimes have difficulties producing these endocannabinoids, which produce an imbalance in their systems. By taking cannabinoids, like CBD, these endocannabinoids are replicated and stimulated.
CBD will interact with receptors like TRPV1, 5-HT1A and GPR55. TRPV-1 receptors help balance body temperature, pain, and even inflammation. When 5-HT1A receptors are stimulated, there is a significant increase in dopamine secretion – producing antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. CBD blocks GPR55 signaling, which has been shown to decrease reproduction of cancer cells. Some evidence exists that CBD may activate PPARs receptors as well – another anti-proliferative effect.
CBD has really only been studied anecdotally with in-vitro clinical trials. Most of the studies have been done on rats, with fewer on people, and even fewer on dogs. However, more and more studies are coming out from dog owners regarding CBD’s effect on their pets. So, what exactly can CBD be potentially beneficial for with dogs?
Itching, scratching, licking, chewing…dogs become very irritated with skin issues. Generally, these issues mainly affect dog’s bellies, armpits, ears, paws, and cheeks. Thankfully, CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, which often helps relieve the cause of itching, hives, and blisters. While most owners put CBD on their dogs food, you can also apply it directly to their skin.
While CBD has been shown to relieve anxiety in a lot of people, so it’s not a surprise that a lot of people are now using it on their pets. Dogs can often have separation anxiety while being left alone and may even lead to destructive behavior. Not only do some dogs experience relief from anxiety, but some owners notice less fears and phobias like fireworks on the 4th of July when using CBD. Additionally, some owners notice that their dogs are less aggressive while on CBD.
CBD seems to boost appetite in dogs as well as relieving digestive problems. Some dogs, like people, are very picky eaters. By increasing their appetite, some dogs may not be as picky. This could be good for dogs who have troubles eating a healthy amount of food – or have been given too many treats to want solid food.
Arthritis and other pains
Arthritis is one of the most orthopedic issues in dogs. The most common among this term is hip dysplasia. Many veterinarians have turned to CBD because of its anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects for pets with orthopedic illnesses. Cancer is the most common cause of deaths in dogs over the age of 10. Although CBD does have many anti-proliferative properties, it can also be used for cancer pains.
Normally, dogs that suffer from epilepsy, suffer from an abnormal electrical activity burst in the dog’s brain. Seizures in dogs can be caused from eating something poisonous, head trauma, stroke, brain cancer, and many other conditions. 1-5% of dogs suffer from seizures and/or epilepsy. Traditional medicines like phenobarbital generally stop the seizures, but have numerous side effects in both humans and dogs. Hundreds of testimonials have emerged about pet owners, and humans themselves, using CBD to help treat their seizures.
