According to this article, by the Jewish News Service, Israel now has funding to start researching CBD as a viable treatment for asthma. An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, and approximately 250,000 deaths each year are due to the disease. Over the next eight years, it is expected that worldwide asthma cases may increase by as much as 100 million.

“The research project focuses on researching the effects of the non-psychoactive cannabis compound CBD and identifying its potential inhibitory impact on allergic airway inflammation that causes asthma attacks. According to CIITECH’s leadership, the study is expected to yield results within six months.” Because of the anti-inflammatory properties within CBD, it has long been a topic of discussion for asthma. Asthma is generally caused by inflammation of the airway.

Levi Schaffer, an expert in asthma research, says, “Most of the symptoms of allergic disease patients are controlled by either symptomatic drugs or corticosteroids. However, some patients are steroid-resistant and allergic diseases such as severe asthma have been labeled as unmet clinical needs by the WHO (World Health Organization), we believe our research will provide a novel and effective solution to treating this condition.”

Other studies, like this one from 2012, suggests that, “The endocannabinoid system is an important modulator of neuroinflammation and a possible drug target. In selected conditions, the activation of CB1 receptors in cerebral blood vessels can have beneficial antiischemic effects.” It also states that “The activation of CB2 receptors on mast cells has direct anti-inflammatory effects, causing decreased release of pro-inflammatory mediators by these cells. The activation of CB1 receptors on bronchial nerve endings has bronchodilator effects acting on the airway smooth muscle and may be beneficial in airway hyperreactivity and asthma.”

Although more evidence, research, and results are needed to be conclusive, the outlook for CBD as an anti-asthmatic medication seems encouraging.
