On Saturday, October 7th, 2017, pet owners and professionals gathered at Colorado State University (CSU) according to an article by WestWord. Seven veterinarians spoke about how CBD products are now being used for pets, and growing at a rapid pace.

Dr. Stephanie McGrath is leading a study based out of CSU, regarding CBD treatments for epilepsy and osteoarthritis in dogs. Her specialty is in neurology, and she states, “We have diseases that we don’t have treatments for that work, so there’s a problem. A solution to that problem is trying to find a solution that does work, so we are always searching,” she said. “That, along with this drug becoming legalized, prompted a lot more questions from clients and veterinarians. And [with] me being unable to answer their questions, that really bothered me. So the more I started looking, the more I realized what a void there was in cannabis research.”

Currently, her study involves 27 dogs who have arthritis effecting at least one join and shows visible lameness for at least the prior four weeks. There are no psychoactive effects in these products, as the THC levels are always under 0.3%. Each dog receives either CBD oil or a placebo for six weeks. Following this six weeks, the “patient” is then given the opposite medication for six weeks. The dogs all receive X-rays, daily pain assessment, fifteen minutes of walking per day, bloodwork and more during treatment.

The findings of this study will provide professionals and dog owners with factual evidence. McGrath insists that the biggest struggle with CBD is the continuing statement that “we need more research”. She is trying to help fill that void, but states that finding funding is the most difficult part. She encourages people to visit this webpage to donate for researching involving pets and CBD. Research is currently being conducted on dogs, cats, and horses.
