Cannabidiol’s Suppression of Depression

Research is showing that cannabinoids like CBD may help with #depression - each one of us has an Endocannabinoid System – that means we are pre-wired to be responsive to cannabinoids! It is expected that as many as 20% of people experience symptoms of depression. Major depression is 10x more common in people born after 1945. The scariest numbers include depression being a part of 80% of suicide deaths, and about 25% of suicides in the US are felt to be because of major depression that undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. As scary as these facts are, there are also studies that show cannabidiol (CBD) can help with depression.

One study evaluated the effects CBD had following acute and chronic administration in the olfactory bulbectomy mouse model of depression (OBX), and it studied the underlying mechanism – which was previously unknown. The results of the study showed that “CBD exerts fast and maintained antidepressant-like effects as evidenced by the reversal of the OBX-induced hyperactivity and anhedonia.”

It was also found that CBD dramatically increased serotonin and glutamate levels in a different manner – dependent on both the emotional state and duration of the CBD treatment.

“In conclusion, our findings indicate that CBD could represent a novel fast antidepressant drug, via enhancing both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signalling through a 5-HT1A receptor-dependent mechanism.”

In another study, similar effects were shown.

“Studies involving animal models, performing a variety of experiments on the above-mentioned disorders, such as the forced swimming test (FST), elevated plus maze (EPM) and Vogel conflict test (VCT), suggest that CBD exhibited an anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in animal models discussed. Experiments with CBD demonstrated non-activation of neuroreceptors CB1 and CB2. Most of the studies demonstrated a good interaction between CBD and the 5-HT1A neuro-receptor.”

So, in time, hopefully more studies will come out showing the benefits of CBD and depression. For now, the results have been positive, and with treatment that hasn’t shown any major side effects.
