A recent article by the Denver Post outlined the story of John Kofel, a 72 year-old man, and his fight with cancer. It all began in October of last year when his biopsy showed metastatic prostate cancer. For obvious reasons, John was devastated – after all, his daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30s. He knew the nightmare that it could become, but scheduled an appointment with an oncologist and his shock turned to anger. This oncologist was very discouraging and John left feeling “I’m a dead man.”
John scheduled an appointment with Dr. Edward Eigner, and it changed his life. Four of twelve samples were positive for cancer, and John’s research began. He found many studies showing that compounds within cannabis can kill cancer. Cindy O’Bryant, a professor at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy says, “There is data to suggest cannabis can kill cancer cells in the lab. It appears to affect cancer cells and not normal cells, unlike chemotherapy does, but this is happening in a dish, in the lab, not the human body. Getting it in people to see if it has an effect, therein lies the problem.”
One study that shows this is from the National Institutes of Health:
“Indeed, cannabinoids possess anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects and they are known to interfere with tumour neovascularization, cancer cell migration, adhesion, invasion and metastasization.”
Kofel is now taking CBD oil via a dropper twice a day, from a local provider. His suggestion to others is to “Do your homework; get good stuff from reliable people”. Upon diagnosis, he was put on Lupron, a drug that is supposed to help lower prostate specific antigen (PSA). After six rounds of chemotherapy, Lupron, and CBD, his PSA has dropped from 82 to 0.22, a level which is significantly lower than the 4.0 threshold that causes concern.
Kofel’s doctor has told him, “Whatever you’re doing, it’s working.” Kafel said, “No one is using the word cure, but my mind-set is I can cure this thing.”
