Olivia Newton-John announced recently that she had been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, and that she would be using “natural wellness therapies” to treat it according to this article. It wasn’t known exactly what that meant until her daughter took to Instagram saying, “My mom and best friend is going to be fine. She will be using medicine that I often talk about. CBD oil! (Cannabis has scientifically proven properties to inhibit cancer cell growth) and other natural healing remedies plus modern medicine to beat this.”
The American Cancer Society (ACS) stated that, “Data shows that it inhibits growth of cancer cells in petri dishes, and in animal studies, but it’s limited data and I can’t recommend it for human use outside of a human clinical trial. The initial data indicates it should be researched more though,” says Dr Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the ACS. Dr. Brawley then stated the importance of knowing where the CBD oil is coming from.
A study from the National Institute of Health (NIH) also shows promising evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids could be a therapeutic treatment for breast cancer. It stated that CBD was the most potent inhibitor of cancerous cell growth, with low potency to noncancer cells. Although a mode of action is not fully understood, the study claims that it is due to CBD’s ability of inducing apoptosis (the process of marking cells for scheduled death).
A second study from the NIH also supports the premise of CBD being helpful in the treatment of cancer. This report states:
“cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid with a low-toxicity profile, could down-regulate Id-1 expression in aggressive human breast cancer cells. The CBD concentrations effective at inhibiting Id-1 expression correlated with those used to inhibit the proliferative and invasive phenotype of breast cancer cells. CBD was able to inhibit Id-1 expression at the mRNA and protein level in a concentration-dependent fashion.”
This same study then concluded that “CBD represents the first nontoxic exogenous agent that can significantly decrease Id-1 expression in metastatic breast cancer cells leading to the down-regulation of tumor aggressiveness.”
