Hypertension is something that 75 million American adults struggle with. That number represents 1/3 of America’s population. Because hypertension increases the risk for heart disease and stroke – which account for the first and third leading causes of death in America – It is imperative that we find solutions for hypertension. The latest news that CBD may help with hypertension brings even more applications to cannabinoids for the Endocannabinoid System
According to a study by the Journal of Clinical Investigation, cannabidiol (CBD) may be an exciting new form of treatment. In this study, conducted by the University of Nottingham in the UK, assessed the effects of a single oral dose of CBD. Nine male subjects were subject to a random, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study.
The administration of CBD reduced resting systolic blood pressure and stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle of the heart in a single contraction). CBD, when compared to the placebo, was found to reduce blood pressure following exercise, or in response to stress.
Interestingly, subjects also had a slightly increased heart rate after receiving a dose of CBD, but no “adverse events” were reported by participants at any point. The study concluded that:
“Our data show that a single dose of CBD reduces resting blood pressure and the blood pressure response to stress, particularly cold stress, and especially in the post-test periods. This may reflect the anxiolytic and analgesic effects of CBD, as well as any potential direct cardiovascular effects. … Further research is also required to establish whether CBD has any role in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders such as a hypertension.”
This is very encouraging news for preliminary studies, especially when it has been shown that only 54% of American’s that suffer from hypertension have it under control. Yes, more research needs to be completed before any definitive conclusions can be made, but studies such as this one certainly seem to show promise in treating hypertension.
