According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases around 5 million American adults suffer from fibromyalgia. About 85% of these people are women, although men can develop it as well. Fibromyalgia is idiopathic, meaning it’s unknown what causes it. Common symptoms include morning stiffness, painful menstrual periods, tingling in the hands or feet, headaches, insomnia, and memory issues (sometimes called “fibro fog”).
A study from 2011 explains how cannabinoids can be used to potentially treat some of these symptoms. It states that they work synergistically with opioid drugs, but is less effective in omega-3 fatty acid deficiency. Many people who suffer from fibromyalgia are using opioids, and there is a growing concern about the addictive or harmful side effects. Preliminary studies like this one have shown that opioid use can be reduced, or sometimes even stopped after introducing cannabinoids to the body.
Additionally, the National Institutes of Health shows that fibromyalgia, headaches, IBS, and related disorders have spinal, peripheral and gastrointestinal mechanisms that promote pain. Interestingly, this study shows that cannabinoids have demonstrated the ability to block those mechanisms, resulting in decreased pain. Because fibromyalgia is now classified as a central sensitization state with secondary hyperalgesia, it makes sense that cannabinoids would help reduce the symptoms. The conclusion from this study states:
“Migraine, fibromyalgia, IBS and related conditions display common clinical, biochemical and pathophysiological patterns that suggest an underlying clinical endocannabinoid deficiency that may be suitably treated with cannabinoid medicines.”
Although this is preliminary research, the results appear to be very promising for those people suffering from this disorder.
