The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) show that around 16 million American adults have experienced at least one major episode of depression with the past twelve months. The lifetime risk of developing depression is nearly 20%. While many people think of depression occurring in adults, they also show that 2% of young children and 8% of teenagers have serious depression.
A recent study from Neuropharmacology wanted to find more evidence as to whether Cannabidiol (CBD) has potential to treat major depression and the mechanisms of how it works. So, they set out to evaluate the effects of CBD following both acute and chronic administration in the olfactory bulbectomy mouse model of depression (OBX), and studied the mechanism of CBD as well. The results of studying the behavioral and neurochemical actions following CBD treatments were pretty remarkable.
They claim that their results “demonstrated that CBD exerts fast and maintained antidepressant-like effects as evidenced by the reversal of the OBX-induced hyperactivity and anhedonia.” The administration of CBD notably increased serotonin and glutamate levels in a different manner depending on the emotional state and how long the treatment was performed. It is believed that the fast antidepressant-like actions in OBX mice is due to the potentiating effect upon neurotransmitter levels occurring immediately after the first injection of CBD. The study concluded by saying:
“In conclusion, our findings indicate that CBD could represent a novel fast antidepressant drug, via enhancing both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signalling through a 5-HT1A receptor-dependent mechanism.”
The interesting part of this is how quickly the effects took place. The British Journal of Psychiatry conducted a study that showed most antidepressants will show some improvement within three days, but that most improvement occurs in two weeks. This makes the evidence of CBD impacting the mice “immediately” even more promising.
