Pain is something we can all relate to. We have all probably experienced pain at some point in our life. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, almost 24 million Americans experience “a lot of pain”, while approximately 126 million adults (55.7% of the population) reported some type of pain in the 3 months prior to the survey. Those are pretty staggering numbers.
In a study from 2015, Cannabidiol (CBD) was tested to see if it showed synergistic effects (a greater effect when combined with another agent, then when tested separately) when combined with morphine. When tested alone, morphine “produced antinociceptive effects in all three models of acute nociception, whereas CBD alone produced antinociception only in the acetic acid-stimulated stretching assay.” The study does claim that CBD and morphine did in fact produce synergistic effects in reversing acetic acid-stimulated stretching behavior.
This study concluded that:
“these results suggest that distinct mechanisms of action underlie the interactions between CBD and morphine in the three different behavioral assays and that the choice of appropriate combination therapies for the treatment of acute pain conditions may depend on the underlying pain type and stimulus modality.”
A second study concluded that,
“In the first ever controlled trial of a Cannabis Based Medicine (CBM) in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), a significant analgesic effect was observed and disease activity was significantly suppressed following Sativex treatment. Whilst the differences are small and variable across the population, they represent benefits of clinical relevance and show the need for more detailed investigation in this indication.”
Although more studies are needed, there is some very encouraging information between these two studies. Significant analgesic effects for rheumatoid arthritis and enhancing the impact of morphine while reducing pain is something that could help millions of people in America alone.
