CBD, The Endocannabinoid System, and Impacts on Alzheimer’s Disease

CBD for Alzheimer's Disease - Cannabinoids for Dementia - Research and News on the Endocannabinoid System from That's Natural at www.cbdoil.life

Most neuro-inflammatory disorders like Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease, and multiple sclerosis have had more studies completed showing how cannabidiol (CBD) may help them. Because of the complexity of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and the poor availability of animal models that are relevant to the human disease, this isn’t entirely true.

However, there are still several studies showing how beneficial the endocannabinoid system, and compounds like CBD can be. One study explains that a deficiency in CB1 receptors can cause an acceleration in AD symptoms. So, it can be concluded that by feeding our body more cannabinoids, like CBD, these receptors would be more efficient. It states, “the findings indicate that CB1 deficiency can worsen AD-related cognitive deficits and support a potential role of CB1 as a pharmacologic target.”

In a more specific example of the endocannabinoid system, this study describes its role with alzheimer’s disease. It claims that as with the other neuro-inflammatory disorders, the endocannabinoid system may play a similar role. It states:

“the available data indicate that endocannabinoids are likely to play in this disorder a role similar to that suggested in other neurodegenerative diseases, that is, to represent an endogenous adaptive response aimed at counteracting both the neurochemical and inflammatory consequences of beta-amyloid-induced tau protein hyperactivity, possibly the most important underlying cause of AD. Furthermore, plant and synthetic cannabinoids, and particularly the non-psychotropic cannabidiol, might also exert other, non-cannabinoid receptor-mediated protective effects, including, but not limited to, anti-oxidant actions.”

It goes on to say “This might open the way to the use of cannabinoid receptor antagonists as therapeutic drugs for the treatment of cognitive deficits in the more advanced phases of this disorder.”

Although more research is needed to say conclusively whether it has a major positive impact on those suffering from AD, the evidence that does exist seems very promising.
