Mice in this study had both collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and type 2 collagen (CII) arthritis. CBD was given after mice had shown symptoms of arthritis, and after this treatment, CBD was shown to be an effective treatment both orally and intraperitoneally. The article states:
“CBD-treated mice showed a diminished CII-specific proliferation and IFN-γ production, as well as a decreased release of tumor necrosis factor by knee synovial cells. In vitro effects of CBD included a dose-dependent suppression of lymphocyte proliferation, both mitogen-stimulated and antigen-specific, and the blockade of the Zymosan-triggered reactive oxygen burst by peritoneal granulocytes.”
It was also shown that CBD blocked the rise of lipopolysaccharide (a large molecule that provokes a strong immune response in animals). Because of these findings, it was concluded that CBD has a potent anti-arthritic effect in CIA, because of its immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties.
